Termites are known as "silent destroyers" because of their ability to chew through wood, flooring and even wallpaper undetected. There are about 2,000 known termite species in the world. Each year, termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage. Termites invade homes by crossing from their colonies in yards to foundations through cracks or gaps around pipes and wires, giving the pests access inside. They are drawn to above ground locations in the house that remain damp enough to support their need for moist conditions, without having to return to the soil.

All termites consume cellulose-based plant materials, making all homes susceptible to infestation, regardless of their construction type. There are three major types of termites found in the United States: subterranean, drywood and dampwood. Each type of termite has its own dietary preferences.

• Subterranean termites prefer softwoods but may invade most species of wood.
• Dampwood termites generally stay close to the ground, but will choose moist, decaying wood anywhere it is found.
• Drywood termites are often found in attics and require little moisture in the wood they eat.
